Paper Cutting

Although papercutting is a craft that dates back hundreds of years, it never fails to look fantastic in any room.
With some brightly coloured paper and a scalple knife you can have beautiful, unique artwork with minimal costs.

What to find:

  • Scalple knife
  • A picture to trace
  • Tracing paper
  • A pencil
  • Cartridge paper/card
  • Coloured paper
  • PVA glue

First, trace around the image that you want to cut out. Alternitavely, you can draw your own picture straight on to card (but remember to keep it relitively simple).

Having traced the image, transfer it onto cartridge paper or card. Go over the lines in pencil to make them more obvious.

Using the scalple knife cut out the image. Make sure you cut out the inside details (e.g. the fox's eye and nose) before the outline; it makes it a whole lot easier!

Choose a piece of coloured paper. We're going to make a colection of woodland themed cut-outs so we chose duller colours.

Spread some glue all over the back (the side with the pencil marks) of the cut-out. Glue it onto your chosen paper and there you have it! You can make a frame out of paper if you like.
