Felt Dress-up Dolls

I made these felt dolls for my godmother's daughter, Zoe, for her birthday. The clothes took me a few on and off days but the actual person was a very quick easy job. Enjoy!

What to Get:

Felt - flesh coloured; various colours for clothes, shoes/socks and hair/hats

Sew-on velcro

Cotton + embroidery thread (including black, red and white for the face)

Needle + embroidery needle

Plain paper

  1. For the body shape, cut a template in the paper, making sure that it fits on your flesh coloured felt. For a proportionate body, the body should be around 8 times the length of the head. When the template is cut, pin the paper to the flesh felt and cut out the body...

        2. Next, give the felt cut out an embroidered face using the black, red and white embroidery thread...

        3. Choose some colourful felt and cotton in a contrasting colour (i used green felt and orange thread) for the underwear...

        4. Now, attach pieces of velcro at the waist line, shoulders and the feet, hand stitch it on. You will need to put more velcro on the back of the head for hair later...

        5. To make the clothes, use the template to measure the correct size on the felt. For skirts, shorts and trouser etc. allign the top edge of the fabric with the waist line velcro and draw the shape of the clothing on the felt. For shirts, using the template, draw an outline on the felt around the shoulders, arms and body/tummy, down to the waist line velcro. Use the same idea for the shoes and socks. Another option is to draw a template for the clothes on paper using the doll as a size guide. My doll is uni-sex, so i have made a range of male and female out fits. attach a strip of velcro on each item (in line with that on the doll) so they can stick to the body..

        6. Make a selection of hairstyles using more felt. You can sew hats and earrings to the hair if you like...
